Thursday night CNN hosted the first presidential debate of the year. This debate was held way before the election and had different rules than most debates. But did it live up to what people expected and did we learn anything new about each candidate. Debates are meant for the candidates to talk about what they would do to better the country if elected. After watching the debate my first reaction was I still don’t know what policies each candidate plan to implement. What exactly are they going to do to move us into a better future. A lot of issues that I hoped were going to be asked about were completely ignored. And of course, depending on what news outlet you watch depends on who did the better job at the debate.
Although I personally believe Trump is a much better choice for President and he did better at the debate, that doesn’t mean there were areas where he didn’t do well. Watching Biden however, it worries me that this is who we send to talk to our foreign leaders about the future of this country. No wonder there are wars going on everywhere, which was brought up during the debate. However, a lot of this country’s biggest issues weren’t discussed as much as I would have liked. Both candidates made attempts to argue their points and both candidates made claims that weren’t accurate. Aside from that, if I had to make a choice on who I would rather have as my commander in chief, it would definitely have to be Trump.
This CNN hosted debate set certain guidelines and rules, which I personally believe they enacted to try and give Biden an advantage. When a candidate would answer a question from the moderator, the other candidates microphone would be turned off. When their two minute time limit was done, their microphone was then turned off and the other candidate’s microphone was turned on. This rules was enacted so a candidate couldn’t interrupt the other candidate while they were answering a question. Although this did stop the back and forth that tends to happen during debates, it did cause the candidates to get off topic of their question. Instead of answering the question given they would respond to the other candidates previous statements. Even with the microphone rule and the fact that there was no audience there, it didn’t seem to make a big difference or give either candidate an advantage.
As for the performance of each candidate, Donald Trump definitely performed much better, especially during the beginning. The debate started off by talking about the economy and inflation, with President Biden being asked the first question. Watching Biden answer the first question it seemed like to me that he was going to have a hard time. Not having the questions beforehand was a struggle for Biden and although I am sure he practiced a lot to prepare, I could tell that he was having a hard time putting facts together. Biden touts about how much he has done for this country and that he was handed the worst economy in the history of the country. The only thing Biden doesn’t talk about is the fact that he took office during Covid.
There were many times that President Biden was unable to finish a thought, made false claims, struggled to get his words out, and it was hard to understand what he was saying at times. Biden’s facial expressions would give me the feeling that he didn’t know what was going on. Every time an attack was made on each candidate, they would accuse each other of lying, which some were but some weren’t. Towards the end of the debate Biden did seem to be alert and active, but it didn’t change his struggles with facts.
I am going to make another post talking about each topic in more detail. As for what resulted from this debate, not much. Nothing happened that would make anyone change their mind about the candidates. It did create a problem for Biden. After his poor performance his base tried to clean it up by saying he had a cold, which just makes it look worse. Foreign leaders are talking about President Biden’s performance. This makes us look weak and divided. With the other leaders looking at Biden’s performance atop of all the attention he has gotten on his mental capacity, it makes them think they are able to take advantage of this country. From the way the world looks, it seems like that is exactly what they are doing.
Now the Democratic party is seeming nervous and asking themselves if they made the right decision on Biden being their candidate. Although Biden would have to make the decision himself to drop out of the race, which doesn’t seem likely, it is to close to the election for a new candidate. As bad as Biden seems now, imagine what he is going to be like in another four years. If a doctor were to do a cognitive test on Biden right now I am sure he would fail. The only thing I learned from this debate is that President Biden isn’t capable to be our president, and Trump is always going to be Trump.
One response to “Trump VS. Biden; Did We Hear Anything New”
I personally was disappointed with the debate. The purpose is for each party to talk about what they would do for our country if elected. All I saw was 2 children arguing and name-calling. I still strongly support Trump but wish for a more informative, responsible debate by both parties.
